BBQ Restaurants & Reviews

BBQ Restaurants

Arthur Bryant's - 2 in K.C., MO & 1 in K.C., KS - This BBQ legend was founded in the early 1920's, by Charlie Bryant, Arthur's older brother. When Charlie died, Arthur took over and moved the BBQ restaurant to 18th and Brooklyn, just four blocks away from Municipal stadium, the home of the Kansas City Blues, followed by the Kansas City Athletics. Municipal Stadium was also the first home of the Kansas City Chiefs.

With the move near to the ball park, it became a nationally known eatery. Major league players ate there and fans would stop in before the games to eat on the premises or take out to the ball park. The fame of Arthur Bryant's grew. Then renowned author Calvin Trillin declared in Playboy magazine that "...the single best restaurant in the world is Arthur Bryant's Barbeque at 18th & Brooklyn in Kansas City."

Q Barbeque - Midlothian, VA - Having loved and grown up around great barbecue, and, as a caterer, appreciating its ability to satisfy large crowds of people, Tuffy began researching slow cooking methods involving a wood burning fire. The result was better tasting barbecue, at least in Tuffy's mind, and with the help of employees, friends and family, the Cool Smoke Team was born. The question now was whether the public and the judges would share Tuffy's enthusiasm. They did. In its very first competition, the team was awarded 2nd in the Pork category and 7th in the brisket category and has been winning the big prizes ever since, garnering over 100 awards, including 10 state championships. Obviously, Tuffy's culinary instincts, military training and catering experience have paid off. Cool Smoke has cooked at the Great American Barbecue Invitational, the American Royal Invitational and the Jack Daniels World Championship. And in 2007, Cool Smoke was the Team of the Year for the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS), ranking it as the best competition team on the barbecue circuit.

So now, you can enjoy Cool Smoke's award winning barbecue and side items without traveling to a barbecue competition. Q's philosophy is simple. Make it so good you'll have to come back for more. So far, it seems to be working.

BBQ Restaurant Reviews & Review Web Sites

Chowhound.com - Ethics Statement (from Alpha Hound Jim Leff) - I guard my anonymity and my opinion cannot be bought. I always pay my own tab, and this site will never contain restaurant advertising. May I eat nothing but Wendy's for the rest of my life if I ever offer less than purely objective chow advice.* 06/21/2006

Roadfood.com - Great regional meals along highways, in small towns and in city neighborhoods. It is sleeves-up food made by cooks, bakers, pitmasters, and sandwich-makers who are America’s culinary folk artists. Roadfood is almost always informal and inexpensive; and the best Roadfood restaurants are colorful places enjoyed by locals (and savvy travelers) for their character as well as their menu.* 06/21/2006

Wilber's Barbeque - About as good as Eastern North Carolina barbecue gets. Moist, vinegary meat with plenty of browns, great stew and great sides. Wiber's [sic] seems to mostly cook shoulders though there was one split hog smoking when I checked the smoke house.

45 minutes or so off of I-95, but nice country and well worth the trip. 4172 U.S. 70, East Goldsboro, NC, (919) 778-5218.
Warranted a rating of 5 Grease Stains from Holly.* One of our own Fools, crobinso, told us about this restaurant and said, "I Had Me Some Wilber's!!  Um, um, UM, UM, UM! It sure was good! Ah, Wilber's BBQ, what a unique taste treat." 04/21/2004
